Colosseum: A large amphitheatre in Rome used for gladiator battles and public spectacles, like the fights between gladiators and wild animals.

Dictatorship: A form of government where one person holds absolute power, such as Julius Caesar's dictatorship in the final years of the Roman Republic.

Emperor: The ruler of an empire, like Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire.

Irrigation: A method of supplying water to crops, which the Romans perfected with aqueducts (similar to our modern-day water pipes) to bring water to farms and cities.

Myth or Legend: A traditional story explaining the origins of a culture, like the myth of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome.

Palatine Hill: One of the seven hills of Rome, considered the location where Rome was founded and home to many emperors.

Republic: A system of government where citizens elect representatives, which Rome had before becoming an empire, known as the Roman Republic.

Roman Empire: A vast society ruled by Rome that expanded across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Rome: The capital city of the Roman Empire, founded around 753 BCE and known for landmarks like the Colosseum and the Forum.

Romulus and Remus: Twin brothers in Roman mythology are said to have founded Rome, with Romulus becoming the first king after he killed Remus.

Seven Hills of Rome: The group of hills on which ancient Rome was built, including the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, giving the city its strategic advantage.

Tiber River: The river that runs through Rome, providing water and trade routes crucial to the city's growth and expansion.
